f1

is a series of internet active installations by the art group f1. themes of the works are the raise of the internet and the expansion of digital contents and information within the world wide web. core of the work is a spider software which collects all types of data available in the internet. all collected data is remixed and sampled thru different digital-analog connections and user interfaces (for example motion tracking) and finaly combined to huge moving image compositions.

hardware: pc, mac, projectors, sound system, infra red lights, cameras, midi keyboard, midi interface, sensor box

"today's Installations use several media such as sound, internet, user interaction and projection are more and more produced like films. therefore f1 is a project produced in co-operation with 3 students: timo piatkowski (concept, www), armin purkrabek (concept, motion tracking), dominik rinnhofer (interactive sound).

f1 works on the visualisation of an internet spider or robot. our robot, let's call him "webdog", jumps from hyperlink to hyperlink and catches pictures, sounds and texts. it collects these elements into a temporal memory where the pictures are scaled to 640x480 pixels. Since many pictures in the internet are drastically fragmented (e.g. for design reasons) we give every tiny element e.g. a button the same value as for example photos that are already scaled to be recognized, then every picture becomes a performer.

the pictures/elements can be bars, banners, buttons, etc.

the pictures start to talk to you. astonishing many pictures have text on themselves therefore they are graphics, trying to give you some kind of advice: "buy now", "click here", "it's about time you scanned our products", etc.

the sound fragments that the "webdog" finds are chained together and played. by user interaction, the flow of sound and pictures are influenced. with his influence on the sounds the recipient can get an idea on how the computer "reads" the movement. the recipients real movement expands into the virtual space. in this way the recipient can influence the speed of the "web-projector".

by installing a webcam in front of the installation f1 becomes a closed circuit installation. the pictures that the webdog catches are also brought back to the internet. then the human bodies moving in front of the projection become part of new webgraphics. the recipient watching the pictures of the webcam is able to take snapshots of his favourite moments."
